Old Fashioned Milk Paint Challenge

Recently I joined a group called The Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest! Each month a paint sponsor and group of gals chooses a theme and the fun begins. June is “Shabby Chic Storage” sponsored by The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company.

I am very excited about the theme and the paint sponsor as I love this companies product. Shabby chic to me means light color, "scuffy" paint that highlights the piece but keeps it looking aged and full of character. I had the perfect piece in mind to use as my project piece.
this old discarded wooden shoe shine kit

The outdated orange stain and glossy finish just made this piece boring, perhaps why discarded to trash ;( I am a sucker for old solid wood pieces and love to think of ways they can be given new life. I knew right away this one could be repurposed with many future uses. All of the uses would be for storage; holding a pretty bouquet, using for original shoe care products, a unique kitchen utensil holder or my favorite, magazine rack!

Like all my old wood pieces the first step was a good scrubbing and once dry, it was checked for repairs which none were found. This piece was well made. I gave it a quick sanding just to smooth the sealer then got busy applying my Old Fashioned Milk Paint on in buttermilk color choice. This creamy yellow color will match almost any homes color palette. Milk paint is so easy to use and has an advantage of making just what you need for a project keeping it fresh for each one. Check out my Creative Moments Facebook page for many other pieces I have done in Old Fashioned milk paint.

Distressing made some of the original wood visible keeping it aged. A bit of dark wax in clear was added again to keep it looking its age then a light dry brush of the buttermilk to highlight over the depth and a final coat of clear wax to seal it all up nicely ready for years of use in which ever storage use the buyer chooses.
